Android Applications
Android has become the operating system of choice for a wide range of handheld applications, thanks to its reasonable cost and capable hardware ecosystem — from consumer smartphones and tablets to more specialist industrial and point-of-sale devices.
Mobile development is meaningfully different from traditional desktop or web development. Smaller screens, touch-first interaction, and sometimes more constrained hardware all need careful consideration. It's important to work with a developer who has real, tested experience in this space — not just someone retrofitting desktop thinking to a phone.
We can build applications for phones, tablets, and a range of specialist Android hardware, and we'll work with you to make sure the interface fits how your team actually uses the device in practice.
The majority of our Android work centres on data capture — applications used in the field to record, verify, or act on information. This might be a warehouse operative scanning deliveries, a field engineer logging an inspection, or an auditor working through an inventory. The application needs to be reliable, fast to use, and designed around the physical context in which it's being operated.
A key consideration for field applications is connectivity. We build apps to work in either mode:
- Offline-capable — the app stores data locally on the device and syncs to a central server when a connection becomes available. This is essential where signal is unreliable or absent, such as in warehouses, remote sites, or buildings with poor coverage.
- Real-time connected — where an internet connection is available and immediacy matters, the app can communicate directly with a server or API, giving an instant view of what's been captured across all devices.
Common use cases
- Delivery and goods-in verification — scanning barcodes or QR codes to confirm items have arrived at the correct location, with GPS confirmation
- Asset and inventory auditing — working through a list of items in the field, recording condition, location, and any discrepancies
- Inspection and survey forms — structured data entry that replaces paper-based processes, with photos, signatures, or GPS attached to each record
- Job management for field teams — receiving jobs, updating status, and logging completion notes from a mobile device
- Branded portal apps — a lightweight Android wrapper around a web-based system, giving a native app experience without full native development cost
We develop in Java and Kotlin, and have experience with barcode and QR scanning, GPS, RFID readers, and specialist Android hardware such as Zebra and Honeywell devices. If your use case involves a specific device or hardware integration, mention it when you get in touch.
